Growing up alongside artists, wine makers, farmers and makers of all sorts, the creative process was very much a part of my life early on.  My family cultivated almost everything we consumed so I was involved with everything from preparing the soil for planting, to harvest and collection, and enjoying the fruits of our labor.  The aromatics of life were intoxicating and distinctive to this day, but it wasn’t until later in life that I realized how those aromas would transport me back in time.  The connection between the olfactory sense and memory is truly fascinating. 

With a combination of my roots and a driven personality I found myself pursuing my own small business in 2013.  What started as a hobby transformed into a successful men’s grooming business where I started mixing fragrance for the first time.  Soon I realized that the scents I created for my concoctions were what I loved most about the process and that my true passion was olfaction.

I moved my business to Rochester NY in spring 2021 with the dream of creating a fragrance company.  I soon discovered that Rochester was once a perfume mecca with a rich history of great perfumers including C.B. Woodworth Sons Co. and the Alfred Wright Perfumery in the late 19th century.  The early 19th century earned Rochester NY the name Flour City as it was the perfect place for wheat farming settlers to cultivate their crop, use the Genesee River to power their mills, and send the finished flour back east via railway, making Rochester the largest producer of flour in the entire world and the original Boomtown.  At the same time German immigrants introduced superior planting skills and soon Rochester became the leading producer of seeds and home to the world’s largest nursery, Ellwanger and Barry, who supplied plants for the orchards of California and the Royal Gardens of Tokyo.  The city of Rochester transformed from ‘Flour City’ to ‘Flower City’ and is my inspiration for Flower City Fragrance.  Like the bold and innovative settlers of this fine city, we believe our fragrances will be reminiscent of their prosperity, tell the stories of yesterday, and bring the deep history of those who came before us to life.    

All of our cruelty free, vegan fragrances are blended in house from high quality, carefully sourced materials. Each bottle is filled by hand and double checked for imperfections, we want to make sure you receive the best possible fragrance to add your rotation. We package our 50ml etched bottles in easily recyclable paper boxes with paper labels to minimize waste, our 10ml travel size bottles also use paper labels than can easily be removed.

All of our fragrances are bottled at 19% concentration for maximum performance and longevity.

Fly Avi Fly was founded in the wake of a tragedy. In August of 2015 I gave birth to my precious daughter -Avianna Elizabeth. After multiple miscarriages over the course of five years, my daughter arrived. I call her my miracle baby. I was responsible for a far larger task than ever before in my life. Fast forward two months later as I grieved the loss of my child. I was once again responsible for a far larger task than ever before- surviving.

On October 20th of 2015 I lost my daughter. The professionals were reluctant to call it SIDS- yet there is no other real explanation- aside for the potential for hyperthermia (which also was never confirmed). Regardless of the reasons for her departure from this world, life was one big hurdle. Most days I could not pull myself out of bed let alone complete typical daily activities. There are still many days when I close my eyes really tight and think that when I open them she might be right there beside me. 

One of the hardest things I experienced after her passing was running into pregnant women as well as the baby/children sections of department stores. I would shut down, break down, and at times become angry and confrontational. I knew I needed to do something to channel my grief. So here we are.

Fly Avi Fly was born approximately two years following the death of my daughter. Initially I created handmade items as a way to channel my grief with therapeutic tasks. More people started asking for my headbands and I recognized this could be a way to educate people about child loss, and grief while also donating part of the proceeds to infant loss organizations. 

Fast forward to almost seven years later, several travel jobs later (I am a Speech Pathologist by trade), and a whole lot of time to reflect. I have decided to shift our business model to include others with stories like my own. Everyone has a story. Having said that, Fly Avi Fly has rebranded into a small shop filled with artisan goods- each with their own story (please see our story page for more information about these wonderful individuals). 

Part of all proceeds are donated to different infant loss organizations throughout the year. Furthermore, almost all of our profits from our signature items (infant loss headbands and feather themed bows) are donated. Some of these organizations provide research while others provide support, literature, counseling services, etc., to families who have lost a child.
